Have ready: your dog’s weight, what they ate, roughly how much, and when.
Chocolate poisoning is about dose, not drama. A Labrador that eats a milk chocolate bar is usually fine. A terrier that eats the same weight of baking chocolate is an emergency. The calculator below does the arithmetic vets use — methylxanthine dose per kilogram of body weight — so you can tell those two situations apart in about ten seconds.

What the number means
The figure above is milligrams of theobromine per kilogram of your dog’s body weight. Theobromine is the stimulant in cocoa that dogs metabolise far more slowly than we do. Published clinical thresholds:

These are population figures, not promises about your dog. Age, heart condition, and anything else eaten alongside all shift the picture, which is why the advice under every result is still to phone somebody.

This is why type matters more than amount. Cocoa powder carries roughly 2,900 times the theobromine of white chocolate, ounce for ounce. A teaspoon of cocoa powder is a bigger problem than a whole white chocolate bar.
Two hours is the window that matters. If ingestion was recent, a vet can often induce vomiting and stop the problem before it starts — far cheaper and safer than treating it afterwards. That window closes quickly, which is why calling now beats watching and waiting.
Do not induce vomiting at home unless a veterinarian tells you to. Hydrogen peroxide dosing gets done wrong constantly, and it is dangerous in a dog that is already twitchy or drowsy.
The three that do not follow dose rules
Chocolate is predictable. These are not, and it matters that you know which kind of problem you have.
Grapes and raisins — no safe amount exists
Grape toxicity is idiosyncratic: some dogs eat a handful and are fine, others go into kidney failure on a few. No dose-response relationship has ever been established, and current thinking points at tartaric acid, which varies enormously between grapes. There is no threshold to calculate, so this calculator does not pretend there is one. Any quantity is a phone call.
Xylitol — faster and more dangerous than chocolate
Xylitol triggers a massive insulin release in dogs. Blood sugar can crash within 10 to 60 minutes, and higher doses cause liver failure. A single stick of some sugar-free gums carries enough to affect a small dog. It hides in gum, mints, sugar-free peanut butter, protein bars and some toothpastes. Read the label, then call.
Onion and garlic — the slow one
Alliums damage red blood cells and cause anaemia that can take several days to appear. A dog that seems perfectly fine that evening can be seriously unwell later in the week. Garlic is roughly five times as potent as onion by weight. Cooking does not help.

Emergency and urgent care practices is the wider list — excellent for a Sunday afternoon, but many of them close. Check the hours before you drive.

It cannot examine your dog, it does not know what else they ate, and it has no way to account for their heart, kidneys, age or medication. A low reading is not permission to stop worrying — if your dog is behaving oddly, call a veterinarian regardless of what this page says.
About the figures. Theobromine concentrations and the 20/40/60 mg/kg thresholds are standard values in veterinary toxicology references including Merck and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Real products vary; cocoa content is not regulated to a fixed figure. Amounts are estimates unless you weighed the wrapper.
